I have used both and opted for WordPress. You can try both and decide on which platform, you want to start a blog.

On WordPress, you can build your own website or blog. Whereas in medium, you get a free platform that allows you to publish the content under some restrictions.

Medium is a free online community which allows anyone to share their stories or educate others through information. But you are not the owner of your content, as 'A Medium Corporation' can shut down its service or cancel your content or can ask for prices for additional services in future.
Whereas, in WordPress, you own your content. As you host your website so have full control over the data. To avoid any such consequences I would suggest to choose WordPress over Medium.

On medium, you get huge engagement in comparison to WordPress. In terms of indexing, medium articles get index soon. Whereas articles of WordPress take time to get index.

Personally, I have used WordPress CMS to start my own blog. The overall UI of WordPress is simple and user-friendly so that even novice users can easily work on the same. You can have full control over your data. I would recommend WordPress only over Medium as I found it simple and user-friendly by working on the same.

WordPress is an ideal solution for those who are looking to launch an official blog or website. It offers excellent functionality out of the box, plus an infinite list of plugins and add-ons to maintain your blog so it looks fresh and flexible.
And if we talk about Medium, it is best suited to the lone wolf bloggers, who possibly already has a heavy following on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. From there, they can pull those same followers to their Medium blog or account, and start to build a reputation within the existing Medium community. It is also good platforms for those who don't have much knowledge about development or programming.
Because some time WordPress requires some changes according to the layout but in Medium you get a single editor and in that, you just need to enter your content and publish it.

When you compare Medium and WordPress, it is important to know that these are two different tools used for different purposes. WordPress has the capability to do everything that Medium can do but this means WordPress focuses somewhere else or has much scope than just writing.

This means Medium is much better that WordPress as it creates an environment for writers but you get stuck with the features that come with it as they are out-of-the-box. Content creation won't be very joyful with WordPress but the results will be the same as Medium and you have the permission to add more features if you need to.

So, if you want to make a decision, you should consider the following points:
