Title: Difference between managed and unmanaged hosting.
Post by: Ritu on December 15, 2018, 11:47:15 AM
Hello all,
I am looking for a new hosting provider. Is it ok if I choose unmanaged hosting as I think in managed hosting I will have to pay extra? Is it so? What makes the difference?

The server used for hosting your site already has many software installed in it. Sometimes, it becomes a tedious job to handle all its functions specially, when you don't know all its technical aspects. So, managed hosting providers gives you various services like automated backups, malware scanner and removal, security sweeps and many more. All these additional services are managed by the managed hosting providers.
Whereas, in unmanaged hosting, host provider will give you a simple server with an operating system installed in it. This means you need to install and maintain all the additional software on your own. The company won't be responsible for any of your management work.
As per my experience, I don't think that managed hosting is overpriced so you can try it.

In Managed Hosting, user purchase space on the server to store their website data and files. A web hosting provider is responsible for management of server, administration and support.

In Unmanaged Hosting, you are completely responsible for management of your server. Your web hosting provider is not responsible for management.

In managed hosting, the clients are able to set up domains and mailboxes but the sole responsibilities of necessary configurations and maintaining the server lies in the hands of the web host company. On the other hand, in unmanaged hosting you may, for example, get simply a server with only an operating system installed. This means that you'll then need to install any necessary software on your own.

There's obviously a cost difference between managed and unmanaged hosting, but you shouldn't consider it as the only parameter to make the right choice.
When you purchase a hosting plan there are plenty of components in it. The server comes with all types of hardware, software and their tools to run your website. So when you opt for a managed hosting service, the handling of software, monitoring, and scanning of malware takes place by the host provider.
Whereas, in unmanaged hosting, you get a barebone server, where you have to do everything on your own. Unmanaged, itself says that hosting provider is not responsible for any of your work.
And for additional services they ask to pay a heavy cost. So, I think it is always better to select a cheap but managed hosting provider.

I have a great experience with managed hosting. Managed hosting lets you completely focus on your business. When any technical issue arises, the technical support team helps you to resolve your issues. Also, you don't need to worry about the software updates, automated backups, etc.
