Post by: Keeran on January 07, 2019, 05:57:26 PM
Hey,
I am bit confused about the Top level Domain names.
Can anyone tell me what is Top level Domain?
Does the top level domain means most frequently used domain names on internet?

Top Level Domain is an extension that is followed by the dot and it can be anything like .com, .net, .in, .org, etc.

Top Level Domain (TLD) is considered as the last segment of the domain name. TLD identifies the website and something that is associated with it, like the organization name, organization location (geographical area). Thus, it doesn't mean the frequency of domain names used on internet.

TLD is a very last section of an internet domain name, which is loacted after the last dot. E.g. TLD for google.com is .com and for wikipedia.org is .org
Different types of TLD's are :
1. gTLD (generic top level domain) - .gov, .org, .edu
2. ccTLD (country code top level domain) - .au (for Australia),  .be (for belgium), .cn (for China), .in (for India)
3. IDNs (Internationalized Top-Level Domains)

A top-level domain is the last part of the domain name after the "dot". It is also know as domain suffix. There are two different categories of top level domains - country-specific top-level domains, and generic top-level domains.

With top-level domains you can identify certain website elements, such as, the business type, the country of origin, type of website - if it's a government site, school website, and more.

.COM is the most popular TLD and therefore, is used by many brands.

Top-Level Domain is an extension that is followed by the dot and it can be anything like .com, .net, .in, .org, etc.
.com,.net, and. int are examples of generic top-level domains (gTLDs). Country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) include.es,.cz,.be, and.fr, among others. Each TLD is overseen by a registry, which is a body appointed at the national level (for ccTLDs)
