What are SSD drives and how do they impact web hosting?

SSD stands for Solid-State Drive. From the name one can figure out that there is no moving parts in SSD drives. The traditional spinning hard drives has a mechanical arm with a read/write head to move around the disk to access the data. This difference is what makes SSD more faster than the HDD. In SSD data is stored on a flash memory chips and it uses non-volatile memory for accessing the data. As there are no moving parts on SSD, data can be accessed much faster and less power is consumed. SSD drives are quite costly then HDD but its worth the investment as it helps in improving the website performance.

WOW!! I thought SSD drives are expensive and they are not available with all the servers! I enquired for SSD drives the other day with some web hosting companies and they said that there are additional charges id I wanted to host my website on SSD drives.
