What exactly happens when I purchase web hosting?

I am new to this forum, I am a newbie when it comes to web hosting. I am in process of starting a website. My website is a forum where people can talk about various aspects of starting an online store. I know that in order to start a website I will have to purchase a web hosting account. But what happens after that? What will I have to do after purchasing a web hosting package? What steps will be executed after that to make my website live?
