Why it is essential to rank your business on Google?

I am owner of paint manufacturing company. There are multiple competitors in this industry and this makes very difficult to get ranked on top in search engine.  However, I have a website, but I never thought to list my business on the search engine because of competition or small-scale business. On the other hand, it is observed that my competitors are ranking on the search engine even though they are on the small scale still they are ranking in the list. This makes me think that why it is essential to get ranked in Google?
