Best SEO activities to get traffic for website.

I am doing some free SEO activities for my websites and I have been noticing that it is really a "Timeless Battle". This is very true that we have very limited time and resources for our SEO activities. Please suggest me some tips of free SEO activity, which will help me to get traffic for my website. An activity which I am doing daily are:-
1) Optimising on- page content.
2) Building backlinks and till the time, I build around 800 backlinks and I know these are very less in comparison to my competitors. I will increase the numbers of backlinks. 
3) I am participating on various social networking sites and forums.

1) Make sure that your meta tags are short and it should not be repetitive.
2) Generating good content is important. Fresh content has good impact on search engine rankings. For personal and professional website, blogs bring better ranking for the website. 
3) Become a contributor on a reputed website related to your business.
4) Paid advertisement will also help to boost your website ranking.

I think SEO tell us to optimize the content which means to modify the old content by adding useful information without changing its structure. But once the page is indexed by the Google then it can't be changed over time.
