The most common reason for 404 error is the wrong link structure of your website. The wrong link that redirects users from one page to other pages, often lands them to the 404 error page.

Use 404 Widget to customize 404 error. Many web developers are using the widget to tackles such errors. With the help of this tool, developers can develop pages that offer ways to the customers for finding the required information, when accessed via the broken link. This will allow fixing the error like misspelling and grammar. The search bar will help users to look for the information as per their demand.

The good way to tackle 404 error is to provide a valuable link on your 404 pages. That means when you design a 404 page, mention the link that will redirect you to the home page, or the page that is most surfed by your users. This way your visitor will land up to the other page and it won't hamper SEO.

There are 3 different steps that you need to follow to fix 404 not found errors and these are as follows:

Step 1:- Find each and every error

Step 2:- Fix the error

  • Redirect the 404 error somewhere else.
  • Correct the source link.
  • Restore deleted pages.
  • Ignore the not found error.

Step 3:- Ongoing monitoring

So in this way you can fix the 404 errors on the website.

Please help me to know the SEO friendly ways for tackling the 404 errors on the website.

First of all, we need to understand the most common reasons for 404 error pages: 404 errors can be happen for multiple reasons. Here I have listed some of them:
  • If you change your permalink or the linking structure of your current website. (This situation happens when you have changed the design, or structure of site permalinks.)
  • When you removed some particular content or page from your website.
You can tackle this situation using some easy techniques:
  • If you are using WordPress CMS for your website, then use the redirection plugin to monitor and redirect all your 404 error pages from your dashboard.
  • If the error is occurring due to a misspelled link from any other domain then you can either ask the developer to update that particular link, or you can use the 301 redirection method.
  • Another method is you can manually de-index 404 pages from the search engine index database using the webmaster removal tool.
  • You can also create a custom 404 page to redirect all your 404 error pages.
I think this information is useful to you.
