I am keen on knowing if the domain name matters in terms of SEO? Is it necessary to have a keyword as the domain name? I am planning to register a domain name but I would like to be sure about the SEO benefits. Also, it will be great if someone can provide me information on what domain name extension would be right for me if I plan to setup an educational website in India. Should I opt for .com or .co.in? Which one is better from SEO perspective?

In my opinion if you are marketing your brand well, it is not necessary to have a keyword as the domain name. Having said that, it is also true that if you are lucky enough to get the keyword as the domain name, it will be easier for you to rank higher in the search engines. Regarding the domain name extension, if you are operating in India, opt for a .co.in domain or generally you can opt for a .com domain name extension.

I would say try to get a keyword rich domain and if you don't get it, then settle for some other domain. After all, a keyword rich domain name does make some difference.

Having the main keyword as the domain name will help you in the following ways:

* The presence of the keyword phrase in the domain was itself a ranking factor.
* The presence of the keyword phrase in the domain encouraged other webmasters to include keyword in the search.
* The keyword phrase in the anchor text when linking to the site.

I think apart from having a keyword-rich domain name, it is important to select a brandable domain name. Brainstorm yourself and plan on impressive and brandable domain names that will become popular with the people.

Well, it will be great if you can ave your main keyword as the domain name. However, if you cant then there's not much to worry! If you are promoting your website properly, it will rank well irrespective of what domain name you have chosen.

I totally agree with your view.
