Basically, traditional web hosting comes under two main categories first one is shared hosting, in that multiple hosting accounts are hosted on the same hosting server and also the resources of hosting server are shared with all users. Another one is VPS hosting, in that you get a limited amount of hosting resources like memory, bandwidth, disk space, etc. that is allocated to you only.

Due to growing competition, the web hosting industry has augmented and this leads to the introduction of new hosting solutions.

SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) - In that, where you pay to get access of business software for a specific time period. They allow you to run and manage the software or application on their servers anytime and from anywhere. This service also referred to as software on demand that offers access to software via the internet.

SaaS platforms: Google Apps, Dropbox, Salesforce, Cisco WebEx, Concur, GoToMeeting

Benefits of using SaaS service:

  • No updates, installation, and maintenance are required
  • Low cost
  • Access it anywhere
PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) - It is a service platform on which you can develop or run your custom software easily. Service providers will manage the servers for you, so that, you can focus on the development of the business.

PaaS platforms: AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Windows Azure, Heroku, Overview, Google App Engine, Apache Stratos, OpenShift

The benefits of using PaaS service:

  • Take care and maintenance of all servers and operating systems
  • You can develop or run a custom application without having to develop a Platform to run it in

There's a big difference in these 3 :
1) Web hosting -
Web hosting is a service that we opt to make our site visible online. In this, the customers buy the plan in which he gets some software in it along with database and server space. The software's are owned by the company.
2) SaaS -
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) means it provides you access to different software through the internet. It depends on the pay-as-you-go method, that means, it allows customers to use the software when needed.
4)  PaaS -
Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is a vertical of cloud computing that allows customers to run and manage the applications in the cloud infrastructure.

SaaS is the best solution for small developers that offers a software application to their customers at a decent price. Most of the mobile applications are running on Android or iPhone are hosted on the cloud.

Whereas in web hosting, anyone can buy a hosting service to host their website and it can be of any type like shared, reseller, VPS, Dedicated and Cloud hosting.

Web Hosting: Any web hosting service offers you or your company a space on physical servers running in it's facilities.

SaaS: Software as a Service (SaaS) is the most popular form of cloud computing. It offers all the functions of a traditional application, but the functions are carried out through the Internet via your web browser.

Differences between web hosting and SaaS:
Security: In case, your company is handling the sensitive data or confidential information of your clients, web hosting is the best preferred option as it offers high security. If you select SaaS or any other cloud computing service, your confidential data might be place alongside the data of other companies, and if anything goes wrong, it can potentially be accessed by other parties.

Accessibility: A cloud solution allows you to access your data from anywhere if you have internet. It means cloud doesn't limit the access, it enhances and improves the ability to reach that data. Cloud solutions are best when you require a lot of collaboration or situations when you want people to get information easily via Internet connected mobile devices available today. With web hosting, you can't access your data from anywhere or anytime.

Cost: Cloud offers pay per use feature which proves to be affordable for all types of businesses. while in basic web hosting, you need to pay the package price either on monthly or yearly basis.

Decision:
Selecting one of them completely depends on your needs and priorities. If your primary concern is to minimize the operational expenses and get virtually limitless accessibility, cloud computing is the right option for you. On the other hand, if you are opting for more security and require fewer services, basic web hosting is the better option.
