The definition of fully managed server comprises of a lot of ambiguity. A managed server hosting platform being offered at Company A might not feature the same service level and features as a managed server hosting platform offered at Company B. So what is your understanding about the concept of a fully managed sever and what does this include?

Is it about taking care of software upgrades and patches, fixing crashed servers, doing installations and pretty much anything so that the client can concentrate on operating the business? Or the client also has some responsibility when it comes to hosting on fully managed servers?

The most beneficial aspect about managed servers is that the web hosting company is responsible for maintaining the servers. There is nothing that the client has to do. The client only rents the hardware from the host and pay the web hosting company for managing it.

Managing a web hosting platform is not at all a cake walk! There are so many things to take care of like monitoring the servers, having the perfect infrastructure, solving issues, upgrading the resources etc. All this cannot be handled by one person. I don't think any business owner might be opting for an un-managed hosting server...

Well, a great discussion going on here!  8)

According to me, there some advantages of un-managed hosting servers. The most crucial advantage is that it provides with with an autonomous control over memory, bandwidth, usage, software installation and storage space. Also, you can customize an un-managed hosting server for meeting the client's requirements as well.

Having said that, it is also important to think through your decision of signing up for an un-managed hosting server.

I would go with the option of un-managed servers because one has complete control over the server. As a result of this, the server can be customized in accordance with the requirements. Opting for an un-managed server is a good option specially for the resellers as they can operate their business on their own without much help from the web hosting company.

Well I guess most of the people who have technical knowledge, opt for un-managed servers. This is because they are affordable and if required customers can get a paid support.

But isn't it time consuming to opt for an un-managed hosting server and then working on maintaining the server and optimizing it?

Shanaya

If you have technical knowledge of maintaining a server, then it won't be hard for you. However, opting for a self-managed server if you are a newbie can be a difficult task.
