Learn to use the Editor in cPanel’s File Manager

Editors in cPanel are used to edit files directly on the web server.
This article will explain you how to use cPanel’s editors to view and edit files directly on the web server.

# 1. What is File Manager Editor?

You are allowed to make immediate changes to your website using cPanel’s file manager, there is no need to upload a new version of the file. cPanel contains two editors, that can be used to edit files directly on the web server :

(i) A plain text editor used to edit text files. This editor can be used with plain text files, such as configuration files.

(ii) An HTML editor that is used with HTML files. This editor provides with WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) functionality. It provides features such as spell check, formatting toolbars, and others that are easy for the users those are familiar with word processing programs.

Just to view a file’s content, you do not need to open the file in an editor.

# 2. Learn to view a file.

There’s not always a need to edit your file. If you just want to view the file’s contents, you can view it even without opening an editor.

To view a file in cPanel File Manager, perform the following steps :

1. Log in to cPanel.
2. On the cPanel home screen go to Files section and click on File manager.
3. From the File Manager’s main window, select the file that you want to view.
4. Click on the View icon.

The file’s content will appear on a new page.

# 3. Learn to edit a file using the plain text editor.

To edit plain text files, perform these steps :

1. Log in to cPanel.
2. On the cPanel home screen, go to the Files Section and click on File Manager.
3. From the File Manager main window, select the file that you want to edit.
4. Click on the Edit icon.
5. Select the character set encoding that is used by your file. The default Unicode is utf-8.
6. Click on the Edit. The file’s content will appear on a new page that is ready for editing.
7. Now save your changes by clicking on Save Changes.
8. Close the editor by clicking on Close.

# 4. Learn to edit a file using the HTML editor.

Perform following steps to edit a file using the HTML editor :

1. Log in to cPanel.

2. Go to Files section on the cPanel home screen and click on the File Manager.

3. Select the file that you want to edit that is present in the File Manager main window.

4. Click on the HTML Editor icon

5. Select the character set encoding that is used by your file. The default will be utf-8 (Unicode).

6. Now click on Edit. The file’s content will appear on a new page and is ready for editing.

7. Do you want to change the format? Then use the formatting toolbar.

It will allow you to change the font size, text alignment, add bulleted and numbered list, and more.

8. Click on Source to view the web page’s HTML source code.

9. Click on Preview icon to preview the web page.

10. Click on Save icon to save your changes.
